What it is
How dermal filler actually works
Dermal fillers are injectable gels made of hyaluronic acid — a sugar molecule your skin already produces to hold water. Placed in the right layer, the gel restores volume that has been lost, supports structure that has dropped, and hydrates the tissue around it.
Ageing in the face isn’t only skin-deep. Fat pads shrink and slide downward, bone remodels, and ligaments loosen. The result reads as tiredness — a flattening cheek, a hollow under the eye, a fold running from nose to mouth, a jawline that has lost its edge. Filler replaces the volume underneath so the surface stops folding.
That’s also why it isn’t a universal answer. If your concern is movement — a frown line, crow’s feet — the correct treatment is Botox. If it’s laxity, filler placed into a sagging face makes it heavier, not tighter. Volume, contour and definition are what filler does well.
Every syringe we use is a registered, CE-marked cross-linked HA gel, and it can be dissolved. That reversibility is the reason HA is our default, and it’s the single most important safety feature of the treatment.
Treatment areas
Nine areas, one gel
Filler isn’t one treatment. Filter by what you want to change — each area needs a different gel density, a different plane, and a different volume.
Nine areas treated in clinic. Filter by what you want to change — or ask us in consultation which sequence suits your face.
Cheeks
The first place volume goes and the first place to restore it. Lifting the cheek supports everything below it, so smile lines and jowls soften without being injected directly.
Typically 1 – 2 ml
Under-eye (tear trough)
Hollowing that reads as permanent tiredness. The most technically demanding area on the face — thin skin, close vessels — and the one where injector choice matters most. Not suitable for every under-eye.
Typically 0.5 – 1 ml
Lip enhancement
Hydration, shape and border definition — not size for its own sake. We build in stages across visits, because the lip that looks right in the mirror on day 14 is rarely the one people ask for on day one.
Typically 0.5 – 1 ml
Jawline definition
A firm gel along the mandible to sharpen a soft or blurred jaw and pull the transition to the neck back into a clean line. Pairs well with masseter Botox on a wide lower face.
Typically 2 – 4 ml
Chin projection
Balances a recessed chin and lengthens the lower third, which changes the profile more than almost anything else we do. Often what a patient asking for lip filler actually needs.
Typically 1 – 2 ml
Non-surgical nose reshaping
Smooths a dorsal bump, lifts a drooping tip and straightens the profile line in fifteen minutes. The highest-risk area in filler work — we treat it with a cannula, conservative volume and full vascular protocol.
Typically 0.5 – 1 ml
Smile lines (nasolabial)
The folds from nose to mouth corner. Usually treated indirectly by restoring the cheek above them first — filling the fold alone is what creates that heavy, over-filled look.
Typically 1 – 2 ml
Marionette lines
The downward lines from mouth corner to chin that give a resting face a permanent frown. Supported from the chin and jaw rather than injected line-by-line.
Typically 1 – 2 ml
Temples
Hollow temples narrow the upper face and make the whole head read as gaunt. Refilling them restores the oval shape and quietly improves everything below — the area almost nobody asks for and many people need.
Typically 1 ml per side
The area that bothers you is often not the area we treat
Faces work as a structure. A deep smile line is usually a cheek problem, a tired under-eye is often a mid-face problem, and a weak jaw frequently starts at the chin. Send a photo and tell us what you see in the mirror, and Dr. Connie will map the sequence — including which areas to leave alone.
Ask on WhatsAppVolume ranges are typical clinical ranges, given so you can sense-check a quote. Your actual volume depends on anatomy, degree of volume loss and what you already have in place, and is confirmed at consultation. We would rather under-fill and review you in two weeks than over-fill in one sitting.
Pricing
Filler prices in Bali, without the guesswork
Dermal filler at Aeconic starts from IDR 4,200,000 per syringe, using the Restylane range. What you pay depends on how much gel your face actually needs — not on a package we’ve decided to sell.
One syringe of HA gel, typically enough for lips, tear trough or a single mid-face area. The usual starting point for a first treatment.
Jawline, chin and cheek work usually needs more than one syringe to look balanced. Combinations are quoted in full, in writing, before we begin.
A soft gel for lips and a firm structural gel for jawline are different products at different prices. We tell you which brand and density we’re using and why.
Prices are in Indonesian Rupiah and confirmed before treatment starts. Nothing is added mid-treatment, and you are never asked to commit to a package on a first visit. If a quote elsewhere seems unusually low, ask how many millilitres it covers and which brand — that is almost always where the difference sits. For an indicative figure before you travel, message us on WhatsApp with a photo and a description of what you’d like to change.
Who injects
Filler is a medical act, and we treat it like one
Every filler treatment at Aeconic is assessed and injected by our clinic doctor, Dr. Connie Calista Tham. Nothing is delegated, and nothing is injected before an examination.
Filler carries risks that Botox does not. The face is dense with blood vessels, and gel placed into one — a vascular occlusion — is a medical emergency that can threaten the skin or, in the nose and tear trough, the vision. It is rare, it is manageable, and it is managed by recognising it within minutes and dissolving immediately.
That is why we work with cannulas in the high-risk planes, aspirate where a needle is required, keep hyaluronidase stocked in clinic at all times, and give every patient a direct number to reach the doctor after treatment. Ask any clinic in Canggu whether they hold hyaluronidase on site. It is a fair question, and the answer tells you what you need to know.
We also show you the syringe, the brand and the batch before it is opened. If filler isn’t the right answer for what’s bothering you, Dr. Connie will say so — sometimes that’s Botox, sometimes a collagen biostimulator, sometimes Liftera 2 lifting, and sometimes it’s nothing at all yet.

Duration & results
What happens, and when
The appointment
Assessment, mapping, topical numbing, then injection by needle or cannula depending on the area. Most gels also contain lidocaine. You walk out and get on with your day.
Swelling peaks
You see volume immediately, but it is not the result yet. Swelling and occasional bruising are at their worst now — lips especially. Cold compress, upright, patience.
The real result
Swelling has resolved and the gel has integrated with the tissue. This is the photo we document and the point at which we review, adjust or top up if anything sits unevenly.
How long it lasts
Lips and tear trough move constantly and fade fastest; chin, jawline and cheek hold longest. Metabolism, training load and sun exposure all shorten it.
Before & aftercare
Protecting the result in a tropical climate
Standard filler aftercare assumes an air-conditioned life. Here it has to survive heat, salt water, pools and sun — so ours is written for Bali.
Before your treatment
- Skip alcohol, caffeine and blood-thinning supplements — fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo — for 24 hours. All increase bruising.
- Pause anti-inflammatories where your prescribing doctor allows it. Never stop prescribed medication without asking them first.
- No dental work in the week before or after treatment, particularly for lips, chin and smile lines.
- Arrive hydrated, rested and having eaten, with clean skin and no heavy makeup.
- Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, prone to cold sores, have had filler before, or have an autoimmune condition. Previous filler changes where we can place new product.
- Don’t book filler within two weeks of a wedding, shoot or flight home. Swelling needs somewhere to go.
After your treatment
- Mild swelling, redness or bruising is normal and temporary. Lips swell the most, and it peaks the morning after.
- Don’t touch, press or massage the area for at least 6 hours — and never massage it yourself unless we’ve told you to.
- Stay upright for 4 – 6 hours. No face-down massage, no sleeping on the treated side for two nights.
- A gentle cold compress helps swelling. Nothing hot.
- No gym, running, surfing or heavy lifting for 24 – 48 hours. No sauna, steam, hot shower or hot yoga for 48 hours.
- No alcohol for 24 hours, and no heavy makeup on the area for the first day.
- Sun, sea and pool from 48 hours, with high-SPF sunscreen and a hat. UV degrades hyaluronic acid faster than anything else you’ll do.
- No facials, peels, RF or laser over the treated area for 2 weeks.
- Contact us immediately — not tomorrow — if you have escalating pain, blanching or dusky skin, or any change in vision. This is what the direct number is for.
Arnica or bromelain is sometimes suggested to reduce bruising. Whether that suits you depends on your medical history and current medication — ask Dr. Connie at consultation rather than self-prescribing.

Filler or something else
Three treatments people confuse with filler
Filler replaces volume. If your concern is movement, skin quality or laxity, it isn’t the right tool — and no number of syringes will make it one.
Botox
Relaxes the muscles that fold the skin. Where filler restores what has been lost, Botox stops a line being made in the first place. Frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines are Botox territory — deep static folds often need both.
Botox in Bali →Collagen biostimulator
Radiesse uses calcium hydroxylapatite to give immediate correction while stimulating your own collagen over months. For diffuse laxity and skin thinning across a wider area — but unlike HA, it cannot be dissolved.
Collagen biostimulator →Skin boosters & Rejuran
Micro-injections that hydrate and repair skin quality rather than add volume. Rejuran uses polynucleotides for delicate areas like the under-eye and neck. Crepey texture is a skin problem, not a volume one.
Skin boosters →Visiting Bali
Timing filler around your trip
A large share of our filler patients are travellers and expats on the west coast. With filler, when you book matters more than with any other injectable — because of swelling.
Leave two weeks before anything that matters. Swelling peaks the day after and settles over 10 to 14 days. A wedding, a shoot or a flight home 48 hours after lip filler is the one scenario we ask patients to avoid.
Book it early in your trip. Come in the first days and we can review you at day 14 if you’re still here, or by photo if you’ve flown. Either way you have a doctor to reach.
Flying within 48 hours? Cabin pressure and dehydration can make swelling look worse before it looks better. It is safe, but tell us your departure date at booking and we’ll plan the volume and the area accordingly.
Beach days and surf. Sun, sea and pool from 48 hours — high-SPF sunscreen and a hat aren’t optional here. UV breaks down hyaluronic acid, so an unprotected face costs you months of your result.

Questions
Before you book filler
Anything not covered here, message us — we answer WhatsApp during clinic hours, Monday to Saturday.
How much do dermal fillers cost in Bali?
At Aeconic Clinic in Canggu, dermal filler starts from IDR 4,200,000 per syringe using the Restylane range. The total depends on how many syringes your face needs and which product density is right for the area — a single syringe covers lips or a tear trough; jawline and chin work usually needs more to look balanced.
We confirm the full cost with you during consultation before any treatment begins, and nothing is added mid-treatment. When comparing quotes between clinics in Bali, always ask how many millilitres are included and which brand is being used — a cheaper quote is very often a smaller volume or an unbranded product.
Is dermal filler safe, and can it be dissolved?
Yes — hyaluronic acid filler is dissolvable, which is its most important safety feature. An enzyme called hyaluronidase breaks the gel down within a day or two, so an unsatisfactory result or a complication can be reversed. We keep hyaluronidase in clinic at all times and would encourage you to ask any clinic you’re considering whether they do the same.
The serious risk in filler is vascular occlusion — gel entering a blood vessel. It is rare, and it is managed by recognising it fast. We use cannulas in the higher-risk planes, aspirate where a needle is needed, and give every patient a direct number to reach the doctor afterwards. Every treatment is performed by our clinic doctor, Dr. Connie Calista Tham, using sealed, branded syringes shown to you before they are opened.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Between 6 and 18 months, depending on the area and the product. Lips and the tear trough sit in constantly moving tissue and typically fade fastest, around 6 to 12 months. Chin, jawline and cheek use firmer gels in more stable areas and often hold 12 to 18 months.
Metabolism, heavy training, weight loss and sun exposure all shorten it. Most patients return once a year for a top-up rather than a full replacement, which uses less product than starting over.
Does filler hurt, and how much downtime is there?
Most patients find it very manageable. We apply topical numbing before treatment and the gels themselves contain lidocaine, so the area numbs further as we work. Lips are the most sensitive area; cheeks and jawline are usually described as pressure rather than pain.
There is no real downtime, but there is swelling — you will look treated for a few days. Swelling peaks the morning after and settles over 10 to 14 days, and bruising is possible, particularly around the lips and eyes. Plan around anything important; don’t plan around the gym for 48 hours.
Will filler make me look overdone?
Overfilling is a dosing and planning problem, not something inherent to filler. The overdone look comes from repeatedly filling the fold or the lip that bothers the patient, rather than restoring the structure that caused it — filling smile lines instead of supporting the cheek above them is the classic example.
We treat conservatively and in stages, review at two weeks, and would rather you come back for more than dissolve what we’ve placed. If you arrive asking for a volume that won’t suit your face, Dr. Connie will tell you so at consultation.
What’s the difference between dermal filler and Botox?
Filler replaces volume; Botox relaxes movement. Filler is hyaluronic acid gel placed under the skin to restore cheeks, define a jawline, plump lips or lift a hollow — a structural fix that works immediately and lasts 6 to 18 months.
Botox is botulinum toxin injected into muscle to soften the movement that creates expression lines, showing at 7 to 14 days and lasting 3 to 6 months. They solve different problems and are frequently used together on the same face. Read more about Botox in Bali, or describe your concern at consultation and we’ll recommend the right one.
How many syringes will I need for lips, cheeks or jawline?
Typical clinical ranges are around 0.5 to 1 ml for lips, 0.5 to 1 ml for the tear trough, 1 to 2 ml for cheeks, 1 to 2 ml for chin, and 2 to 4 ml for a full jawline. Jawline needs the most because it covers the longest distance and requires a firm structural gel to hold shape.
Your figure depends on how much volume you’ve lost, your bone structure, and whether you have existing filler in place. Dr. Connie assesses this in person and quotes the exact volume before starting — under-filling to hit a price point is why some results look flat within three months.
Can I have filler if I already have filler from another clinic?
Usually yes, but tell us at consultation — the area, the approximate date and the product if you know it. Existing filler changes where new product can safely go, and older gel that has migrated or is sitting in the wrong plane needs to be assessed before anything is added on top.
If we think the honest answer is to dissolve first and rebuild, we’ll say so. That’s a longer route and a less profitable one, but adding new filler over a poor result rarely fixes it.

Guide
Choosing where to get filler in Bali
Filler is offered on almost every main road in Canggu and Seminyak, at prices that vary by a factor of five. The gap is not marketing — it’s product, volume, and who holds the needle.
Ask whether they hold hyaluronidase
This is the question. Hyaluronidase dissolves HA filler, and it is the only treatment for a vascular occlusion — the rare complication where gel blocks a blood vessel and tissue or vision is at risk. A clinic that injects filler without holding the antidote on site has no plan for the one thing that must be treated within minutes. Ask before you book, not on the day.
Ask who injects, before you ask the price
In Indonesia, injectables are a medical act. Ask directly whether a doctor performs the injection or whether a therapist does it under nominal supervision. At Aeconic, Dr. Connie Calista Tham assesses and injects — there is no version of the visit where that changes.
Ask to see the syringe
Branded HA filler comes in a sealed syringe with a batch number and a peel-off traceability label. Ask to see it before it is opened, and ask which brand and density is being used for your area. Unbranded and counterfeit gel exists in this market, and it is the main reason a quote can be implausibly cheap.
Understand what you’re paying for: millilitres
Filler is priced by the syringe, and volume is what produces the result. A low quote very often means half a syringe, a diluted product, or an unbranded one. Comparing clinics on headline price alone, without knowing the brand and the millilitres, compares nothing at all.
| Area | Typical volume | What it treats |
|---|---|---|
| Cheeks | 1 – 2 ml | Mid-face volume loss, flattening |
| Under-eye (tear trough) | 0.5 – 1 ml | Hollowing and shadowing |
| Lips | 0.5 – 1 ml | Hydration, shape, border definition |
| Chin | 1 – 2 ml | Projection and profile balance |
| Jawline | 2 – 4 ml | Definition, soft or blurred jaw |
| Nose | 0.5 – 1 ml | Dorsal bump, tip lift, profile |
| Smile lines | 1 – 2 ml | Nasolabial folds |
| Marionette lines | 1 – 2 ml | Downturned mouth corners |
| Temples (per side) | ~1 ml | Hollowing, narrow upper face |
Ask whether they’ll refuse you
A clinic that has never told a patient “not yet” or “not this” is optimising for revenue rather than results. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection or acne at the site, autoimmune flares, poorly placed existing filler and unrealistic expectations are all reasons to postpone. Hearing that is a good sign.
Ask what happens at two weeks
Filler isn’t finished when you leave the room. A clinic that reviews you at two weeks can correct asymmetry or a lump while it still matters. Ask who you contact if something concerns you at 11pm, and whether a review is included.
